I was having the same thoughts. Local dealer has a $30 used 6 ch transmitter with the trainer port. Considering it and getting separate receiver.

I've found some used dsc receivers online. Does anyone see and issue with customizing a wire from the trainer port on the transmitter to the dsc input on the receiver? This may be better asked on an rc forum, but there seems to be numerous members here with some experience in these matters.

THe ROV team I mentor has found two ways to use a controller without needing to use the teach cable.

Option one:

Extend the Rx cable up the tether and have it open to the environment at the control center on the surface. You will then be able to 'wirelessly' be able to transmit signals down to the ROV. Using a coaxial wire for this you can actually send your video sdignal up the same wire since the video and the RC controller are operating on two different frequencies it will save you on tether bulk as well.

Option two(the option we employ):

We purchased a Ufl to SMA bulkhead fitting, digikey p/n ACX1894-ND, then we opened up the Tx and pulled the antenna wire from the circuit board and snapped the Ufl connector onto the board. A small hole was drilled in the back housing of the Tx and the bulkhead fitting was installed. Its pretty simple now as we have a coaxial wire that screws into the back of our controller. The coaxial wire travels down the teather and then is just stripped back to expose the center conductor inside the control box onboard the ROV. The control signal can simply travel the few inches form 'antenna' to Rx and we have a completed circuit.

For reference our controller is an Airtronix RDS8000, we even use the 5th and 6th channel to trip a couple relays to switch camera views and to energize an electromagnet.

I can capture some pictures if anyone is interested.

Is there a fitting for the ufl connector? I've never popped open a transmitter. Seems pretty simple.

there may be. it would depend on the tx.

I do know my 75, 72 and 27 mhz txs do not have any rf connectors in them. the antenna screws directly into a pcb. I don't know about my 2.4 ghz 7c. I'd have to take it apart to find out.

My guess would be the non 2.4 ghz radios wouldn't but the 2.4 ghz one might.

internal pics I've found of the turnigy 9x indicate that it does have a u.fl connector for the antenna.

We had another controller that we simple desoldered the threaded fitting and repalced it with a coaxial cable out the top. the Ufl made it super easy though to make sure we stayed shielded the whole way. I will try and get some pictures tonight.

The ufl connector seems the way to go for me. Can i still run video back up the coax and if so would a common splitter work for that? I was originally going to use baluns to send the video up, but I'm still in the planning stages and have not purchased any equipment yet. I'm getting off topic here too, sorry.
