On Hercules we have two parallel lasers mounted ten centimeters apart on top of the main camera. This gives us an idea of where the camera is pointed but are more there for scaling things by taking a picture with two laser dots that we know are ten centimeters apart we can measure the image and find...

Sounds like you need either a grab sampler or a piston corer http://www.rickly.com/as/bottomgrab.htm A grab sampler gets you sample of the sediments but disturbs it.
