Simple control/tether?

Here is the first of many questions to come. Im planing (hoping) to dive around 500" to 550". So im going with on board 12v batteries. Probley a lawnmower battery(s) to run the motors and head light(50watt). So can i just use simple 12v relays and 500-600" of phone wire with momentary switches to activate the motors?

thats what im doing but im using cat5 i see no real difference though
