Homebuilt ROVs Forum

This is my ROV I built primarily for my Engineering Senior Design project. I built it with future expansion in mind but made a really good pressure housing capable of 1000' working depth. I have since added a stainless steel frame, adding onboard power and working on brushless thrusters. For the control system I am moving from laptop with a joystick to Arduinos on both ends with OSD for data and ROV health. The tether is only 80' now but I plan to go to 250-300' working length soon.

Nice! Have you got any good video footage yet? How did you made the float body? Material?

Like the idea of it being part of your engineering studies and for it to be expanded to.

Keep going your doing great. Also if you have any video of your dives please lets see any of them. (You could also add a music track, for fun...or ping ping noise..)

The float is made of the pink foam stuff with vacuum bagged fiberglass encapsulation. Things I am working on to increase the depth capability are:
onboard power so I can just use cat 5 for signal and powering the electronics (this has cleared up the video interference)
brushless motors to replace the bilge pump motors
syntactic foam float since the current one will not withstand more than 100' or so

I will post more but right now the whole thing is in pieces while I upgrade and replace some parts. I am also working on my TMS which now has a slip ring.

Since it was a school project I was able to get Subconn to donate 2 pairs of connectors, one for the tether and another for the onboard side. I will try to get more pictures or just post my project paperwork in PDF.

A few updates on the system. I have been rewiring and setting up my new topside control system.

The TMS with slip joint and waterproof connection to control box. The main storage box with TMS and ROV. The topside control box in a 1450 Pelican Case. The monitor will be upgraded eventually.

I've seen pics of your project before. Great design and really good work! I'm working on my first one right now.

I noticed you shared a few more detailed pics of your whole system. I'm curious about your tether. I don't see any obvious floats. Is yours neutrally buoyant? If so, care to share some of you design details?

I'm also very interested in what kind of slip-ring you made/acquired for your TMS system.
