buying three to four ESC's for your rov can easily cost $60 and then you have to find room to mount them.
I just ran across this new unit on Hobbyking and haven't used it yet but the premise seems solid.
Four ESC's in one housing for the price of two. Check it out...

As long as you don't need reverse I guess...

I just noticed.

I accidentally found a post on a hard-core copter forum the other day where they were reprogramming ESCs. For anyone prepared to write the code then the ESC you linked to, provided the microcontroller itself is reprogrammable, could be made to do anything, limited only by the current etc.

Got a link?
That sounds interesting.

I was just looking for an ESC circuit diagram the other day, considering using an external microcontroller to drive the FETs. Re-inventing the wheel? Couldn't find that page again,no matter, but very common with the multicopter crowd I realise after searching a few minutes ago. Googled:
esc firmware hack copter. For my purposes I would need an ESC with a flashable Atmel AVR in it, and write the code to use serial control rather than PWM, plus optimise to suit my ROV motor/prop setup, leaving out all the bells and whistles that aren't needed.
Funny, the first result I clicked on had a copter reversing...
