it is pretty advanced but you could put a sonar emitter under the boat, and a receptor on the ROV, hook that into your display to show the distance from source and direction, and you can determine where the sub is in relation to the boat where the control is. you don't need a laptop, but you do need a microcontroller and a video overlay chip. the fpv guys do this all the time. it has been discussed in this thread: http://www.homebuiltrovs.com/rovforum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=400&hilit=overlay another article in ieee spectrum about on screen display...
