Potting compounds
Potting compounds
Can anyone recommend a specific potting compound?
It has been suggested to me that I could use fibreglass resin, like this: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165625.
I also have some of this: http://uk.farnell.com/pro-power/ppc124/ ... Ntt=ppc124.
Not sure which way to go.

What are you potting ? a camera? lights? you could use epoxy for potting and waterproofing.
Re: Potting compounds
I used 2 component epoxy resin for potting my LED lights.

Re: Potting compounds
you can use paraffin wax to pot electronics as long as they don't generate any heat (i.e. stuff other than a light). the wax has the added bonus of being somewhat easily removed.

I would say the best thing to use for potting the light would be epoxy. I have tried potting with clear silicone before and used a flashlight light almost like that and the silicone worked but was very messy until it dried.
hope this helps!

Hi all,
Is there any difference between potting with epoxy and potting with a superglue eg Tarzans Grip? It's an ethyl cyanoacrylate glue. It's cheaper, and is available in bulk sizes. Would it be ok under pressure? I am only potting wires in a junction box, so the wax method isn't really necessary ie I'll just cut the wires free if I ever need to work on them
Cheers

Re: Potting compounds
This product below is probably the best product for any potting applications. It is a two part silicone, desgined and engineered specifically for electronics.
QSI QSil 216 Clear Liquid Silicone
2-part, clear liquid silicone cures at room temperature in 4 hours. Convenient 10:1 mixing ratio in automatic dispensing equipment or by hand. Low viscosity lets silicone flow around complex parts for electrical insulation and shock resistance. Contains no solvents, non-yellowing, -60 to 200°C temperature range. Its optically clear and thermally conductive to help with heat dissipation.

Re: Potting compounds
Specifically, is there any reason not to use the initially mentioned fibreglass resin as a potting compound? I happen to have gallons of the polyester and if it's been tried and tested, then that would save me trying it AND testing it. Thanks.
Re: Potting compounds
We use RS-164-337, it's good stuff and sets solid in 24 hrs.
I get the out of date packs from work when they get thrown out.
Date doesn't seem to be a problem.

This is what I used http://www.ebay.com/itm/291142150337?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT. It worked well for me. Visit http://micomarov.weebly.com/ for details.
