InfraRed

Post by websterthehamster »

I'm on a MATE team, and we want our ROV to be useful in actual situations, such as an oil rig disaster. I saw some videos took by amateur ROVs underwater in the mess, and I couldn't make out any detail. It was just too murky. So I was thinking an infrared camera would work better than a normal visible light camera in those situations, because you could see the christmas tree and other details without the water clouding up the vision.

Any thoughts on this?

Pretty much all digital cameras these days also pick up infrared light, however most have filters over them to block out the IR wavelengths in order to create better pictures. It's just a matter of opening up the camera and removing the filters. However you will then need to do the opposite of this, and add a filter which only lets in IR light.

Thanks for the info! My MATE team is planning on building our rig so we can use it for real, outside the competition, and this is one of the components we're looking at adding.
