But seriously (...), you might as well twist (coil) the umbilical so as to compensate the descent, once on the bottom, you usually stay pretty much at depth, to look at stuff. Going up kinda help you re-coil your umbilical...

actually the first thing I'm going to try is to counteract the yaw with the horizontal thrusters. that will only take a few lines of code.

Can you add some straightning vanes to the vertical thrusters to reduce the swirl. They use them in turbines and other devices when then need to eliminate/reduce rotational torque.

possibly, but that will also reduce the effectiveness of the left and right thrusters to spin the rov quickly.

another simpler (and cooler!) solution would be to have it gyro stabilized.
