Potentiometer help

So im using 4 12v bilge pumps to control the movement of my rov. I want to control the two pumps responsible for forward movement with potentiometers. Ive tried regular household dimmers and volume potentiometers and none of them will work. How can i vary the motor speed of the bilge pumps with a potentiometer or other device?

You could try using a Dimension Engineering Sabertooth 2X25 dual motor speed controller. You can use a potentiometer input to the Sabertooth:
