This may be old hat to most of you?
While trying to work out what is going on with some of the code being written by local rocket scientist, I have found that the Arduino IDE won't open libraries, and opening them with note pad makes them almost unreadable.
So with my best friend Google I found this http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ freeware, it's overkill but does open the library files without me having to change the extensions.
