Plans For a Ducted Fan
Plans For a Ducted Fan
Hey guys! I have some free time today so I thought I would work on my ROV. Lately I've been looking to buy some thrusters, and I have some questions. I have posted links below to the parts I had in mind. Will that fan work well with the motor? Will I need any more hardware to attach the two together? You will have to understand that I'm running on a very tight budget, so I'm shooting for the cheapest parts. Also, will this ESC work well? And how essential is the reverse function? As you may see I am new to both RC parts and Rov design.

Re: Plans For a Ducted Fan
Hi again... I have revised my plans and am now looking at this popular ESC: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... verse.html
I would appreciate it if someone could verify that this ESC will work well with the motor and the fan from my last post. There's no rush but I'm trying to order these parts soon.

Hi,
I am looking at the same ESC or maybe this boat ESC. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... _UBEC.html So I do hope somebody posts something about this ESC, allthough the reviews are oke that I can find.

That one actually looks better than the one I had picked...Cheaper too! The only issue I see is the cooling.fryslan76 wrote:Hi,

Re: Plans For a Ducted Fan
It is using water-cooling, so that can be easy or a problem since you need to have water inside your hull.
The easy route is to just connect some tubing with the outside, the safer way would be to work with a heat exchange on the outside of the rov. Then the inside would be a clossed water circuit.

Yea I think I understand what you're saying. Those reviews don't look to promising though.
Re: Plans For a Ducted Fan
Indeed the boat ESC reviews are not that good for this one .
Re: Plans For a Ducted Fan
This guy seems to have used these ESCs on his ROV...

Re: Plans For a Ducted Fan
Hi guys. See this post. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1069&start=30#p6027 BikerBones also has a video earlier on in the same thread. I purchased these ESCs and programming card after having trouble with the Trackstar 18As http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... r_ESC.html .
However, since then I have gotten the Trackstars and this motor http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... duct=12922 working brilliantly. Had to run them with 400Hz PWM - I found them to be practically useless on the "standard" 50Hz. Have not tried the new ESCs yet, but plan on using those in the next ROV. They look more substantial than the 18As, have an unpluggable arming switch and are physically alot bigger, which can be a good thing.
As for water-cooled boat ESCs, I envisage problems caused by the water pressure. There is some discussion on heatsinking in the above thread.
