Question about waterproof bullet cameras.

Post by haggis_eater »

I am planning on building my first ROV over the Summer and have been looking at getting a waterproof bullet camera. Now, can I just get any ip68 rated camera, as I've been able to find ones on the TMART website with free international shipping for less than £20 (GBP). The only kicker is that the website doesn't seem to give depth ratings for the cameras they sell. I only want to achieve a depth of 10 - 15m, 20 at a push, or would I still need to seal it in a housing?

ip68 is a "moisture proof " designation it is not really water proof and certainly not at depth.

Actually, the "8" in IP68 ratings means "Immersion beyond 1 m". But depth and time must be specified by the manufacturer (like "5 bars for 12 hours" or "2 meters for 30 minutes").

A simple solution is to make a waterproof housing of of a PVC pipe union with plexiglass for the window. (Shown on how to's page of the website)
