Cat 6 cable question

Post by Atle.norway »

Will the cat 6 cable be enough to power 3 thrusters and led lighting.i mean wil i burn the wires using 12v? .the engines themselves will take underwater ca 5 amps each

how deep are you going?
5amps is quite alot on thin wires in a cat6 cable.

Was hoping 30 to 50 meters.i see steve thone uses som form of cat cable.
In my first rov i used speaker cable.yes it can take the current ,but its way to heavy.
What do you use/recomend?

with 50meters of 23AWG(0.25mm2) cat6 cable you will not have any voltage left with 5amp load.
at 1amp you will have 5.1V at the end.

30meter
1A = 7.8volt at end
2A= 3.7V

(calculated with electrodroid App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... nica&hl=en )

I would rather use onboard battery and relays if you have a simple on/off setup. then its just the relay current to send down.

I'm building OpenRov's with onboard batteries, the tether is a 2-wire 24 or 26awg(0.13mm2) cable, but it only transfers communication.

So you use a batterybox with a rubber gasket seal? And the holes were the wires comes out.just seal with saltwater silicone?
If so very cool.getting it watertight is easy,but making it so it can withstand waterpressure is much harder.how deep can you go?
I was hoping to reach 50 m ,even though my bilge pump trusters will comletly lock up at ca30 m
So new type of engines are required.the waterpresure wil stop the driveshaft at somwere along 30 m
I have been told.

this is the current batterytube design: http://wiki.openrov.com/index.php/Assem ... tery_Packs
the new packs/design comming in september: http://openrov.com/profiles/blogs/v2-5-battery-packs

the general spec for the openrov is about 100meter depth, i'm unsure if the batterytubes have been tested but they probably do 50meters.

the openrov does not use bilgepump motors, but open exposed brushless motors. i requires some maintenance if used in saltwater. but its a genius simple way of making thrusters.
