VRLA battery on board

Post by pizgacz »

I've just started my first build an I wonder if I could use my spare VRLA battery (12v/33Ah) as an onboard power supply. I know that these batteries can emit hydrogen when charged improperly. Do they emit hydrogen during normal work? How dangerous is it to use them in sealed containers? The last thing I wold like to do is harming enviroment through underwater battery explosion.

Yes.

Being a sealed lead-acid, 'valve-regulated' battery, it might emit a tiny amount of hydrogen when being charged, but not when being used. I have a few and thought of using them, but the rectangular shape makes them undesirable to me.

I am a strong believer in onboard battery power, versus power over the tether.

Have you looked at batteryhookup.com ? They sell new and used Li-ion or LiFePo4 batteries, full capacity (not Chinese junk). You can get on Ebay and find a BMS for whatever cell configuration you decide to build. 18650 shaped batteries can be assembled into a compact bundle that will fit nicely in a round WTC.
