Brushed motor selection for PVC pipe ROV

Post by myron07 »

We have designed a PVC pipe ROV as shown in the image with dimensions 1.5ftx1.5ftx1.5ft. The placement of the thrusters are not fixed and we may change it as we go about. We only have a variety of brushed motors available to us and were wondering which RPM brushed motors would be best suitable for the given design, and also what size propellers we should use. Also note that this ROV won't be extensively used since it is a college project. We shall be using it in a swimming pool for not more than 10-15 mins per dive. Can anybody please advise us on this matter?

Um...i think your cheap brushed motors will just seize up after a few runs. The water will wash the oil out of the bushings.

That's why beginners start out with bilge-pumps for thrusters.

Or go straight to brushless motors, the lower the KV the better. Low KV = torque, and water requires alot of torque. Then buy 60-80amp+ esc's because pushing water is harder than pushing air, and will require more amps. I use 190kv brushless skateboard motors and 150amp esc's, but my props are aluminum and 8" diameter. (BIG ROV)

Even then we strip the motors, replace the bearings with ceramic bearings, and coat the magnets/stator windings in epoxy resin to waterproof them.

You could try these ducted-fan props. Buy the 6-bladed one and cut off three blades. Like the T200, three blades is most efficient in water.

I use these props, they are available in left and right handed versions.

I chose those because they are designed for kort nozzles, and my thrusters have a cowling, rather like a kort nozzle.

As others have said, use as low KV brushless motors as you can get and high current ESCs. I am going to lacquer my ESCs and wet-run them for cooling. They get pretty hot!

The motors I chose are a little small, but they produce sufficient thrust at 1kg each, so I'm happy enough.
