KoepiRover

Post by lucidguppy »

This is my super simple Seaperch configured 3d printed rover. I called it KoepiRover after copepods. I would like to use a cheaper fish camera like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QRJNTUG or this http://www.amazon.com/Outdoors-Insight- ... B00CJJ9YE8

Basics:

how big is it going to be?

Right now it's looking like its going to be close to a 120 mm cube.

What material did you print it out of?

Right now I'm using PLA printied at 100% infill. The parts seem to be negatively buoyant.

What printer did you use?

I have a printrbot simple metal with a heated bed.

Whats your plan for motors, etc?

Right now I'm using some old 12v radio shack motors that were for the original sea perch design (I wanted to make an ROV for a really long time).

I should have guessed from the remnants of the blue painters tape it was PLA

Just don't let that frame sit in direct sunlight on a hot day because as you may know PLA can melt and warp in the sun.

You're off to a good start though, keep up the good work.

Looks good... the only thing missing I see are some props for the thrusters. :D

I think you said your only going 10' deep but you still might encounter some buoyancy issues using pool noodles. I think they are open cell foam and will probably lose buoyancy after a few feet of depth. If so a few simple buoyancy chambers from PVC pipe and fittings (or even small soda bottles to keep weight down) might be a better choice and should work fine at those depths.

I assume your setting this up like a Seaperch so just direct switches and the cat5 for tether? The only other thing you might have a problem with is trying to drag your tether around with those small motors. Again assuming your using the cat5 plus you'll have the camera cable also so just keep that in mind.

I figured I'd print the propellers ( at least try ).

Is there lighter cable you recommend?

I've successfully used 6v motors on mine

you can get little hobby motors fairly easily off the tinterwebs,

http://www.sciencestore.co.uk/acatalog/ ... Gears.html

Part No.: CDT0007

though i do have 8 motors in total, they are very low current motors and spin nicely, fed with 8.4 volts through 12m of cat5e.
