I suppose I'd better make a start!

Post by Squidwood »

Hi All,

came across this forum and Steves website while looking for ideas and ways to build a ROV.

rather than being a guest and just using the information, I'd thought I would join incase I can help others along the way.

I have a design in mind which is based around other user designs with an aluminium round hull with clear dome and two flat sides for mounting motors.

as this is my first build of a ROV i will keep it as simple as possible but i plan on making the hull so it is possible to accomodate future expansion.

thanks Dave

Good to have you onboard Dave! I'm afraid I'm new to the game so can't offer much advice

your design sounds interesting, how will you get a round aluminium hull? and at what thickness are you thinking?

There are two ways to build an ROV...
  • One is from outside to inside .... given housing and see what you will get into at the end ...
  • The other is from the inside out .... what do I need, how big and heavy is everything and how I pack this in a meaningful housing
I recommend the second one!

I liked electrona1 design and have based my ROV on that

I've built the hull sides so far and I'm going to make the base and
Motor mounts but my cnc machine is playing up :)

I will use round tube with 100mm diameter, I will have a flange welded at either end, one end to fix the dome and the other to fix a blanking plate with cable ingress.

Thanks Dave

This is my ROV, it's made out of plastic chopping boards, with stainless threaded bar, washers and nuts, it's very solid, plus the handles of the chopping boards are now handles on my ROV

Thanks.

I've designed the whole ROV using cad, the motors turned up today so hopefully next week
I'll have the hull finished and the motors mounted.
