stuffing box and prop size

Post by merbass »

I'm looking at using 12volt, 1000rpm brushed gear motors and am wondering about the pros and cons of running the prop shaft through a stuffing box, similiar to this, http://letsmakerobots.com/node/19254

Also, since this is a low rpm motor, I should be using a bigger prop. I would like to keep the amp draw lower than 10, any ideas as to a good sized prop? I was looking at 4 or 5 blade props between 2-3 inches, but im just guessing. Thanks!

I think using a stuffing box might lead to problems. At any great depth I think the grease is probably just going to get pushed out. I've experimented with this concept when just starting out (many years ago) and didn't have any luck with it. I think using o-rings or seals is a better route.

Can't really help you on prop size everything I've done with props was always on trial and error.
