Underwater Jetpack

Post by WaterMan2242 »

Hi,

New to the world of ROV and brushless motors. Not new to electronics or scuba diving/water sports in general.

I am looking to replicate a Jet Ski/Jet Boat type of thrust inside of a backpack to propel myself underwater. ( http://www.modeljetboat.com/jetboat/jet_intake1.jpg )

The information I am searching for is what kind and type of motor should I be looking at?

How many RPMs would a person need and how powerful would the motor need to be to push a human underwater. I originally was going to purchase some scuba thrusters and just throw them into the cad design but figured I would attempt to learn along the way even if I inevitably fail.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

See video from where the inspiration came from -

Very rough sketch attached, not anything to do with the final design. Just to give an idea of what I was thinking.

I saw those videos the other day and that thing looks pretty cool. Just googling some professional dive scooters and it looks like they are rated at about 60lbs of thrust and do about 2.5mph underwater. (of course that was a $5000 one too) the cheaper ones around look to be about $300 and claim 2mph but don't quote thrust. You can try looking at the Bluerobotics motors they use in their thrusters.... or even just use a couple of their T200 thrusters in your design. They only put out about 8-10lbs of thrust though. Maybe a trolling motor off a boat I know some of those put out a decent amount of thrust.

Over all though it's going to be hard without some trial and error to find the right rpms need for the specific jet pump you use. Maybe hit up some R/c boat forums and see what they are using in some of the larger boats... I know there are some jet pump boats out there like you're looking to do they might have a better anwser on the RPM side of things.
