Can a brushless DC motor run on lead acid battery?

Post by rehoward »

Title pretty much says it. Can a brushless DC motor such as:

be safely run by a 12V lead acid battery, such as an automotive battery?

Hi Randy. I have run ESC and motor off a 12 volt lead-acid battery on the bench. No worries if the ESC is designed to handle the voltage. Motors and ESCs usually have the specs listed. Refer links. I do not like lead-acid for ROV because of the potential for explosive gas build-up inside a sealed hull.

Hi Rossrov,

I was thinking maybe a glass saturated mat sort of battery as they are smaller and lighter than a wet lead acid battery. They claim to be sealed too so no out gassing during charge or discharge (is this really true?). Capable of very high discharge rates for short intervals. About $125 a pop automotive size so maybe two could be used if a higher voltage was needed. Big and heavy compared to Lithium however. Battery size would start to dictate the overall size of the ROV too. Has anyone tried doing this?

Short reply to your topic: NO (!)
Running brushless-motors under load needs a maximum on current...lead acid batteries are not designed for that. They can do...but nothing to compare to Lipo as Lipos designed for that!
Believe me, my first test where with Lead Acid batteries. This is not useable for ROVs.
Also...as you said... your ROV will grow with your weight. Need much bouyancy...long charge times...needs ventilation...
