Tether disconnect ideas?

Post by jsut210 »

Does anyone know of a connector/coupler for a cat5 cable? I'm trying to make my cable detach from the ROV instead of cementing a 100' cable to it. It could be like a cable to cable connection, or it could be cable to ROV hull connection. It would preferably be less than 20$.

you should pot/mold the inside of each connector to improve the water tightness. slow curing epoxy or rubber(PUR)
also apply a small amount of dielectric grease(silicone grease; dow corning DC4 or similar) to the connecting faces in case of small water intrusion.

who knows.. maybe.
the connectors are sold by alot of companies like newark/element14,

its probably cheaper with a connector with separate pins, than one with RJ45 connector.
the 400 series is quite nice and compact, fairly ok to solder the wires. and the price is good.

On the datasheet for the 400 it says that the contacts are sold separately. What does this mean? How to do you actually connect a wire to the plug?

I have the cable joiner PX0777/CAT5ESTP at the bottom of this page.

I think I paid about $25 in th US. I am only using my tether for control, I have batteries on board. I have a foot long pigtail connected to the ROV and the Cable Joiner. I have the tether tied to the frame so I am never pulling on the Cable Joiner. I wanted to have motors and everthing with connectors, but the expense adds up quick. If you get the connectors that have pins, they are pricey when you add the pins and connectors. I haven't tested it yet, but for what I am doing I think it will be fine.
