I see this topic is a few weeks old now. Steve's suggestion of 2 laser pointers is attractive due to its simplicity. During WW2 "The Dam Busters" used 2 searchlights mounted under a Lancaster bomber to get the height above water right. Difference being, the beams were aimed to converge at the desired height - two spots appearing as one. The trigonometry approach (among others) is used in laser distance sensors.

For non-fixed distances, you could use 2 lasers (ideally green) but swivel one of them a few degrees with a servo linked to give the desired swivel range. To save on encoders and stepper motors etc, put a simple scale within the cameras field of view.

Simpler, if the camera is rigidly fixed, just use one fixed laser shooting across the field of view and draw range markers on your monitor screen.

For size measurement use the bomber technique, then draw size markers on your screen.
