Waterproof Motors for robotic arm

Post by ponynicker53 »

So I'm guessing for most of us the mechanics of building the arm is not so much a problem as what motor to use, or how to seal a shaft.
I would love some suggestions for waterproof motors, the only ones I found are about $150 apiece for a small DC motor.
Does anyone have any good suggestions as far as pneumatic pumps go?

Has anyone considered using bilge pump motors to control the arm?

Hello Pony,
When I was originally planning my ROV I considered using a bilge pump motor as well. I can't see any flaws in the design itself and I think it would be the cheapest alternative. I can however see potential issues with this. If you did use a bilge pump motor you may have issues with the size... if you have multiple ones to control things from pincer movement to the actual arm you are going to have one very bulky (and possibly heavy) arm.
The other downside is that it is a lot of power for such a small operation!

Good luck!
