flashlight/torch option

Post by spruce goose »

Hi All, Can bright LED flashlights/torches 1000Lm be used enclosed in a watertight assembly, possible overheating problems i expect, but, is it worth a try?. :)

Wow post a link to that flashlight. Sounds like a high end light which means it probably has o rings and a watertight bezel. Fill that sucker with dielectric grease and if the light is in the water it'll stay plenty cool.

We use 3 watt flashlights. See this post for more info.... viewtopic.php?f=12&t=679

We have 4 lights and during bench testing, running the lights at their rated voltage of 4v and 700 ma, the temp of the aluminum heat sink on the back of the lights was at 230 degrees, and the 6.8 ohm 3 watt dropping resistor was running at 240 degrees. To drop the temp, I decreased the current to them by 100ma, this dropped the temp by 50 degrees. We also added a small heat sink to the dropping resistor to dissipate its heat. Running the light tubes in water also reduced the overall temp.
