Re: RS232 v RS485
I'm sure it would work if you wanted to use a fiber optic tether, however fiber optics are a whole different can of worms. fiber is expensive, fragile and difficult for average people to terminate. stick with copper.

Re: Reversing ESC vs DPDT relay
by b/l, I'm going to assume that you mean that you have a brushless motor and esc. go the reversing esc route and forget the relay. the relay is just going to add complexity and potential failure point. for example: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/catalog/23766(1).jpg http://www.hobbyking.c...

Re: ESC Question
as noted, that esc you pointed to is for brushless motors. bilge pumps are brushed motors.
as a general guideline, if an esc has 3 wires for the motor, it is for a brushless motor. brushed escs have two motor wires.
some can do both, but they are rare.

Re: On-Board Batteries
unless you have a breach in your hull, then lipos in a sealed hub aren't under pressure. now if the hull leaks, then you have bigger issues than worrying about the lipos...

Re: Help with choosing a control system for my ROV
pcm is a signal encoding method used over the rf link.
the data coming out of the trainer port is a ppm stream. the only variable is it a positive or negative pulse stream.

Re: Help with choosing a control system for my ROV
like one of these:

that one is probably pretty expensive, though. I'd search for a futaba compatible rx with a dsc port.

Re: Help with choosing a control system for my ROV
it could work. the only issue I could see is if the polarity of the signals is different (i.e. futaba uses a negative pulse and jr uses a positive one). however you bring up a good point - you don't need a 2.4 ghz rx to do this. if you could find a 72 mhz 6+ ch futaba rx with a dsc port it would pro...

I have no idea if it will drive 100' of cable. try it and report back with the results.
