I use a simple geared motor and block setup to move the gripper fingers on my manipulators but the gripping force isn't that great. If you need a lot of gripping force pneumatic might be the way to go. The only thing you have to keep in mind is the Manipulator is only as good as the Rov it is attach...

I think the main reason most people choose PVC over any other material is... it's cheap and commonly available in most locations. The other reason is it's easy to work with, You don't need any special tools (like welders) It can be cut with almost any type of saw and it can either be glued or screwe...

Yeah I've cut few camera cables and lengthen them before. Sometime you have to worry if the wires are shielded but most of the time it's not to much a problem.

I think PCV floats would work fine, (I've thought about this myself) except for that fact that they might be a little bulky, heavier than foam, and cause a little more drag but I doubt you would have to worry about losing buoyancy with them. That type of dredge might work with the right kind of collection container on the output end, but not using a bilge pump. Your standard bilge pump probably wouldn't last to long at that depth, the seal at that depth would probably either leak and flood the motor (which would still work for a bit) or...
