I'm using a modified arcade joystick. I dremelled out the hand grip, drilled a hole through the shaft for the wires and installed a little thumbstick. It controls the vertical and lateral thrusters. It's not pretty, but it works. The arcade joystick controls the 2 main thrusters.

Look into printing it with PETG. It's supposed to be waterproof and strong. I'm going to buy some and experiment with it, maybe print some floats and weigh them down to see how deep they'll go without leaking/imploding.

Don't give up yet. I've been trying to get my project to work for 6 months, and it's not very complicated. Many times I've wanted to toss it out the window(I live on the 4th floor, so probably not a good idea). Have you tried asking for advice in any Arduino forums, or a robotics forum? I'd bet anyt...
