Re: Raspberry Pi only?
Totally late to the party :P From my experience with the Pi yes and no. As ROVEnthusiast pointed out the ethernet cable wouldn't be able to transmit enough power to power the Pi/Motors/etc. They simply weren't designed to transmit that much power. With on board batteries it shouldn't be an issue. On...

Re: Aluminum Hull with Dome
I've been a bit concerned about heat buildup too. The water around the ROV should act as a great heatsink but the PVC is going to act like an insulator. I did notice when I was looking at PVC parts at my local hardware store that they had metal end caps for their PVC cleanouts. Which could possibly ...

Re: 3d printer would solve alot of problems
Hi, I have the solidoodle 2 3d printer for m ROV project. But fount out that it is just not good enought for very accurate shapes. So to be able to make my thruster housings I had to fist 3d-print them just a little to big, and use a lathe to finish it of. For smaller brackets (ect inside the hull ...

Re: 3d printer would solve alot of problems
It all depends what you are using it for. As far as 3D printers go, personally I think fused deposition printers in the 2-3k range are a ripoff. If I was going to shell out that much money for a hobby level device it would be for a liquid resin printer. You can find a decent FDM printer for under 1k...

Re: Surface or Onboard Battery
I had not considered the complete cable weight being an issue before I was planning on trying to make it as close to neutrally buoyant as possible in hopes that it would help somewhat with encumbrance tho overall drag was something that concerns me. Well if Plan A pans out I will need larger motors ...

Re: How long thether can i use?
I am exceedingly new so you will have to forgive me but I wasn't aware that bilge pump motors had such a short operational window. Is it because of power transfer issues or that they just mechanically fail much past 30 meters? If it isn't a mechanical issue you could always put most of the batteries...

Re: Hull penetrations.
Cool beans, I was actually thinking about using pneumatic push fits but I wasn't totally sure they would work. Seeing as sometimes things that are good at keeping pressure in aren't always the best at keeping it out and vice versa. Always good to have another fairly common, readily available and sem...

Re: Raspberry Pi camera board
Using it for an ROV was actually my plan for the RasPi camera when I bought it. My only real complaint about it is that I wanted to incorporate a pan/tilt system and the flat cable it uses to connect to the RasPi isn't exactly super bend/flex friendly. It probably won't be a problem, especially if y...
