Re: building/buying an rov

Welcome, you've found the right place to find everything you need to build a ROV. I'm currently in the planning/gathering parts stage. My goals are similar to yours, want to get to 100 feet. If your water is murky, I doubt that any camera will be very effective seeing thru it.

Re: No Name ROV

I got my rounded end caps at the local Home Depot store. I hadn't really considered replacing the motors when looking at the housings. Looks like I have some more research to do before I start building.

Re: No Name ROV

I'm still working on how to create the little dome shape I've shown, but it is just for improved hydrodynamics and irrelevant to the structural connection. I was thinking that if you get rounded 2" end caps and drill them for the 3/4 struts that would give you the shape you are looking for. If...

Re: No Name ROV

Wow, I really like your project. I'm going to have to rethink my project and maybe incorporate some of your ideas. Luckily, I'm still in the planning stages and acquiring the parts so it wouldn't be too hard change.

Re: Controlling Depth

Maybe have a dropable weight that you could let loose at the end of the dive that would then make the ROV positively buoyant.

Re: Size of motor boat propellers

I also purchased the 500 gph pump cartridges for my ROV. After reading on Steve's website, I decided to go with the 40mm for forward and reverse thrusters. They had slightly less thrust, but used far less current. As I'm going to be running on board batteries, this was important to me. I did get a 5...

Re: I'm new! ROV ideas

Sounds like you have everything under control and well planned out. How about posting some pictures as you get nearer to completion so some of us just in the planning stages can get some other ideas?

CAT5 Tether

I was planning on using CAT5 for my tether. In doing research, it seems the stranded conductor is preferred for flexibility. What I can't seem to figure out is if I need a burial grade cable or not. There is also the issue of Gel-Filled to prevent moisture infiltration. I don't know if this is neces...
