Thanks! That's actually where I'm headed. I'm changing it to have two vertical thrusters, one on each side. I have an unused motor controller output available already, so I think I'll use that.
I wish I had this insight earlier. Seems rather obvious now.
Thanks again.

Re: Vertical thruster position and buoyancy balance
I did some testing in my pool and found this to be a significant problem. With so much weight in the front to counteract the front's buoyancy, the sub pivots on the front when using the vertical thruster. So technically the sub goes up and down, but it doesn't stay parallel to the ground/surface. So...

Re: Vertical thruster position and buoyancy balance
I'm finding some great information from the Cornerstone Robotics website.
Specifically the Buoyancy, Stability, and Ballast lessons dealing with center of gravity and center of balance.

Vertical thruster position and buoyancy balance
My overall ROV design is a PVC rectangular box. The front has a waterproof box which houses electronics. Behind that is a vertical thruster as well as thruster on the left and right. Like this: frame_concept.PNG The air in the electronics box makes the front very buoyant. I estimate it will take abo...

Re: Disc Retriever
I'm still working on workbench. I'm just starting to think about the PVC frame. I'm using a servo and an "Actobotics" gripper kit from robotstore.com The PC app has a user interface and controls, and I use an XBox controller. Communication between PC and RPi uses zeroMQ sending Google prot...

Re: intentional hole in waterproof box
Oh wow, that's a great idea about flipping my box upside-down!
Thanks!
Thanks!

intentional hole in waterproof box
I'm going to try to use a watertight box to house my electronics. I'm expecting dives of no more than 10 feet and this box is only rated IP86, so I know I am pushing it. Re: How to transfer RC joystick control to ROV movement (mat
I'm using an xbox controller, but I haven't really done any real driving. My project is just controllers, wires, and motors on a bench. I use a trigger button as a throttle and the thumb stick for direction. I figured it would be easier to control if the direction and throttle were not all in one co...

Re: Disc Retriever
Still working on my submersible when I have time.
It's still a mess of wires on the end table, but I'll be moving on to creating a few boards to mount my sensors and connectors to.

Disc Retriever
I play recreational disc golf and sometimes lose a disc, and sometimes in a pond. Discs generally sink. Occasionally there are people who scuba to retrieve discs or throw in these sort of scoop-baskets on rope to randomly pull out what they can. I'm working on a ROV to retrieve discs. My ROV will us...
