Re: ROV Project "Bumblebee"

My plan with the servos is to fill them with oil and then possibly glue along the seams using dichloromethane or some other solvent/glue. I seem to remember reading somewhere on here that this method works relatively well at keeping water out as any space for water to get in is already filled with o...

ROV Project "Bumblebee"

Hi there, Many years ago I posted my initial ROV design on this forum and received some very useful feedback. Since then I've gone and done almost 3 years of an engineering degree and it's certainly helped my design capabilities! I've come back with my second design, affectionately called Bumblebee ...

Re: Stopped lurking, started designing

I've been looking at domes for my ROV. I've found this one: http://www.plasticsforyou.co.uk/acrylic ... /d10mm.htm
It looks good for my needs but my only fear is that it isn't strong enough to withstand my target depth of 100m. Any thoughts on it?

Re: Stopped lurking, started designing

Having just re-read what I wrote, I realise that everything is out by a factor of 10. It's going to be around 750mm long and 200mm wide! This means that I can actually have batteries on the ROV itself.

Re: Stopped lurking, started designing

100 metres is a target I'd like to be able to reach, but really anything from 20 metres downwards would make me very happy indeed. I'm planning on using 100mm PVC pipe which has a thickness of around 4mm. Not sure about the length, but I envisage it being around 75mm long and maybe 20mm wide.

UK Sources of PVC Pipe

I've been trawling the internet for a few hours, trying to find 100mm (4") 16 bar PVC pipe for a decent price. After doing this, I have come up with some questions: 1. What is a decent price for this type of pipe? I seriously have no clue. 2. Where on Earth can I get this type of pipe for said ...

Re: Stopped lurking, started designing

Thanks for all of your positive replies and comments. In response to your suggestion ArduRov, I've moved the upper hull forwards so that it is almost infront of the dome, which should stop there being glare in the dome from the LED. I now need to find some PVC pipe that doesn't cost a small fortune!

Re: Google Sketchup is being a pain

I've managed to make the holes. It works if you make any holes you want in the side of the cylinder before making the larger cylinder hollow.

Stopped lurking, started designing

I've decided to finally stop browsing this forum dreaming about building an ROV and instead to actually start designing the thing. I've finally managed to wrangle a very simple design out of SketchUp so that I can visualize problems and solutions. I've decided to post the pictures of my design here ...
