Re: Greetings from a newbie in Michigan

Greetings from a newbie in Southwest Michigan. I hope to build a video ROV for shipwreck documentation and searching here in Southwest Michigan. Welcome aboard! Shipwreck hunting sounds really exciting, I hope you'll share some footage when you're finally there! I have been looking at the "Ope...

Re: Using NMEA 0183 or 2000 with an Arduino

No, was not suggesting connecting a regular RS232 output straight to the Arduino And I never said you did - apologies if it sounded that way! I merely wanted to clarify the happy coincidence that NMEA 0183 devices (ok then, in most cases ) use a 5V/0/5V differential signalling scheme, and not the s...

Re: Using NMEA 0183 or 2000 with an Arduino

I'd still like to try just using one of the outputs of the sounder if differential NMEA0183 and see what happens I'm sure it will work just fine, with RS422 differential signalling you basically have two copies of the data, one of which is inverted. This is to increase reliability over long cable r...

Re: 3d printer would solve alot of problems

Personally, I would much rather get a CNC router as that would allow me to make parts out of a variety of different materials; nylon, acrylic and aluminium being the most interesting ones. For a couple of years now I've been hovering over the "buy" button at YooCNC , specifically the 6040 ...

Re: Using NMEA 0183 or 2000 with an Arduino

I assume it is not a simple case of plugging the RX wire from the device into the Arduino and reading it.. Is it? I also have read there are voltage difference issues. Good point! However the NMEA standard signalling is not RS232 +/-12V but differential TTL level 5V/0/5V - I suppose you could just ...

Re: Using NMEA 0183 or 2000 with an Arduino

a pressure sensor That is only useful if either a) you want to cruise along some distance from the bottom or b) the bottom is perfectly flat. And even then, having a pressure sensor in no way eliminates the usefulness of a depth sounder - the difference is significant. A depth sounder will tell you...

Re: Pool cleaner cable

the pool cleaner wire didn't excite me too much due to it's price and only having two wires Yeah, same here, which is why I kept looking for alternatives. The pool cleaner cable is 1) too expensive 2) too weak 3) too thick 4) too buoyant. While I thought it was interesting at first I now consider i...

Re: Need murky sample footage

Many thanks fryslan76, that's pretty good footage for this purpose, resolution, contents and duration all good, though I wouldn't mind if it was even more silty/muddy/murky :) I haven't had a chance to play with the filtering yet, but I hope to get around to it this coming week. I'm still interested...

Re: Pool cleaner cable

If it is too positively buoyant, the ROV will get to a point where it's vertical thrusters can't overcome the buoyant force of the tether Good point! A case of "too much of a good thing" I guess :) Since I posted this I have come up with an alternative option which I think will work much ...

Re: Need murky sample footage

Hmm, this is not what i would call muddy :) this is rather clear still. Yeah, as I mentioned in my post it wasn't quite what I was looking for but a) it had some objects in the image and b) having a sister-in-law who is a marine biologist and fisheries expert I know only too well how important the ...
