What would be the coolest job?

Working for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute maybe? They are hiring. I just sent in my application for II class Engineer for mooring and rigging. Being out on the research ships, being that close to the stuff we love and being that close to all the information and technology. I'm beside my sel...

Re: Hello from Massachusetts

I'm back! After a disappointing Capstone project (I passed but not with flying colors as I had imagined). My design left a lot to be desired. I want to re-attempt this project so I scrapped my original after stripping out all the stuff I bought for it. Heads clear, goals are noted and I'm ready to m...

Re: Welding PVC pipe?

Hi Kenl Thanks for the input. I have been watching youtube vids on using the welder. I do have experience in welding steels either with a stick, mig or gas, plastic is another medium that I have never done so I'm sure there is a learning curve. My design calls for short adapters afixed to the sides ...

Re: Welding PVC pipe?

Ok, the lack of responses tells me it may be a, not so good idea. But thats ok, I think I will try it anyway. I'll post my findings, fails or hopefully successes. : )

Hope it wasn't used. :o

Where did you order it from? It might be worth looking into.

Welding PVC pipe?

I was perusing Harbor Freight tools this morning and stumbled across a plastic welding iron. This gave me an idea so I googled "welding PVC pipe" and apparently it can be done using special rods which HF does sell. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how well did it work. The iron ...

Re: Change in Career

I'm no rocket surgeon but I've been thinking about working in a research environment myself. I'm aiming at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Woods Hole Ma. (WHOI) The requirements are pretty stiff for EE's but if I can possibly show them that I have half a brain with my ROV building skillz y...

Re: Static ballast tanks

At 50 ft the pressure according to http://www.calctool.org/CALC/other/games/depth_press is about 37psi, so I assume you will need air at > 37psi to shift the water out of the ballast? Yeah, I didn't think of that. The outside pressure, if greater than the pressure in the tank will pretty much negat...

Re: Static ballast tanks

thanks for the replys. RossROV, I had thought about something similar to your idea but I found it a little to complicated. The simplest design using the KISS rule would be 3 valves and a can of propel. Silver Dollar, good idea. I hadn't thought of that and it makes sense. I plan on using 3" sch...
