Re: Florida International University Senior engineering proj

hey Duncan, I used formulas involving DE failure analysis for a cylindrical pressure vessel of pvc sch40 and its unbelievable the pressure that it can withstand. I am pretty sure that I will have a leak in the thru-hull wiring or acrylic dome before id ever have a problem with the pvc failing. Then...

Re: DigitROV, basic design

That all makes sense, Fred. Tbh I haven't decided if I'll use PVC or knock it all up using sheet metal. This is more a trial run for a much deeper ROV so might just use PVC for now so will definitely take your comments on board I don't have a camrera/thrusters yet, which will decide on the overall s...

Re: DigitROV, basic design

This is true. Also for deeper depths I may fill the main control box with oil and have to do something different with the camera, so having them separate now will make that easier in the future

Re: draw, thrust, and components

This may be a dumb question but how are you setting up test tanks to measure the thrust?

Re: Deep dives

I am thinking filling with mineral oil is practically required.

So the camera housing can't really have oil filled in it since it would mess up the picture. Does that mean you need to pay a bit extra for a depth rated camera? Unless you mean there are tricks I'm not aware of

Re: DigitROV, basic design

the first thing: how to you think you will get it out of the water at a landing-stage 1feet over water-line? how you want to handle it? why you use a seperate cam-housing and not the centerhousing? Thanks for the comments guys I dont entirely understand your first question rover3d but I'll give it ...

DigitROV, basic design

Mocked up my overall design plan using tinkercad.com: http://i.imgur.com/Dj70iaO.png http://i.imgur.com/5H0kVmK.png It's basically in layers and modules. Top layer: floatation of some sort with 'vents' for the two vertical thrusters. Second layer: 4 horizontal thrusters, with control box down the ce...

Deep dives

Has anyone ever built an ROV to go as deep as 60m? Or over 100m? ~120m is my ultimate goal (a specific wreck in mind) so I'm interested to know from anyone experienced with these depths what approaches just won't work. For instance, would a steel housing withstand 100m depth? If not, what would? How...

Re: Cad programs?

Trying to use (Trimble) Sketchup Make right now and it makes me want to punch things. Might just try and get on a pc with Autocad at this rate Update: I found tinkercad.com and recommend it if you're working on the simple stages of your design. It was about 83 thousand times better than SketchUp, fo...

Re: ROV-Control V3

Can I ask how you would hope to implement a gps receiver using this board? An antenna at topside?
