Re: Help on first rov control system

How about one of these modules...more costly that DIY Hbridges, but very easy to interface to Arduino.

Re: Hello From League City, Texas

Chad, keep an eye on http://texas.marinetech2.org/ for the 2014 dates at the NASA NBL. Should be late April.

And if you mind posting, what school or organization was doing SeaPerch down your way, I'd love to come visit. I am in CyFair area, NW side. Always trying to get more schools involved...

Re: Paint types

I am curious too. We used a spray paint labeled as "for plastic" on another non-ROV project. It flaked off in some places. When practicing in pools, I have to ensure our hosts we won't foul the water filters with anything, so we have stayed un-painted....but would love to add some color, j...

Re: Surface or Onboard Battery

For us, the CAT5 is only for comms and control. Power is sent down separate 12AWG wiring. We have a smaller ROV that uses three pairs of 18AWG cable for power.

Agree, CAT5 is OK in some cases for powering electronics, camera, etc...not for motor loads.

Re: Water pump buoyancy

How deep you going?

If not terribly far, how about running an airline to the surface? MATE teams do this for both dynamic buoyancy and activating pneumatic devices. Simple hand pumps to full compressors with check valves, etc. ~1/4" tubing generally used.

Re: laptop control

You will need some type of hardware between the PC and the motors. You can research "serial motor controller", for an example which can accept a serial signal and turn on a motor. You will need some software. HyperTerminal is OK to 'type' individual serial commands, but I assume you will w...

Re: Why not openrov?

I think the OpenROV effort is awesome. This forum and certainly Steve's work predates that project, at least the organized product and following we see today. I personally stayed with my own cobbled designs for the learning experience, and wanted a more 'electronic' level of interface. The Beaglebon...

Re: VEX problems

I would search around on the MATE site. Plenty of ROVs there are built with either VEX components, or by people who had previous experience with VEX. There is a Harmony school in Houston I know just did one, but I could not find them via search. But my basic guess, is the Cortex needs to live on the...

Re: VEX problems

So in good trouble-shooting fashion... The controllers behave OK at say 10', but just not at 100'+, correct? What type of wire is being used? I know in general what VEX is and their lineup but have never worked hands-on with it - does it use twisted pair for the control signal(s)? Is the normal supp...
