Re: Turnigy TrackStar 18A ESC
Hi KR2 I bought one of these late last year to try out. Wondered about the beep too, then realised it's a safety/indicator to tell the operator the ESC is ready to go. It actually makes the motor windings "sing" unless I'm mistaken. Elegant trick - saves components. Programming the ESC fro...

Re: Retrieving sediment from top layer of seafloor
No worries Patricia - maybe just acknowledging the forum in your project, whether you use anything from here on not, would be good. There are a few unknowns involved as I see it: Sample material size and therefore what filter type. Flow rate of pump required. Just how to oil-compensate a suitable pu...

Re: Retrieving sediment from top layer of seafloor
Hi again Patricia. Small thrusters are available whose specs claim are suitable for that depth/pressure. Do a google search for "ROV thruster depth". Instead of using the thruster as a thruster, you would be using it as a pump, fixed inside the suction pipe. Bilge pumps would probably be c...

Re: Magnetic Coupling or shaft seals?
Hi Folks. Made a mag coupled unit a few months back. Decided against making another 2 or 3 thinking that oil-filled with a seal may be simpler to make, plus have some other benefits, so oil-filled is the current plan. Seeing I went to the trouble of making the one mag unit however, I thought I'd pos...

Re: Retrieving sediment from top layer of seafloor
Hi Patricia. Maybe a small thruster, rated to that depth, inside the suction pipe. You could make an adaptor out of PVC plumbing fittings to suit the thruster diameter if the pipe itself is too small. Use a bigger area filter than that shown in the picture, and place it across the top of the drum. I...

Re: Measuring tool
I see this topic is a few weeks old now. Steve's suggestion of 2 laser pointers is attractive due to its simplicity. During WW2 "The Dam Busters" used 2 searchlights mounted under a Lancaster bomber to get the height above water right. Difference being, the beams were aimed to converge at ...

Re: Attaching relays to micro controller?
You've probably got the relays sorted now, but yes, solder is really best, and easiest, and if your micro board does not have relay drive ability (another chip or transistors already on it) you will definitely need to add one or the other. The ULN2003 is a 16-pin IC designed specifically for driving...

Re: Video&power into single ethernet cable with baluns.
2 suggestions, assuming no ground problems: 1. Kind of on the right track with the filter. Leave filter out but put a largish electrolytic capacitor, say 2200uF 16 Volt across the power supply input terminals, soldered directly at the regulator, not at the battery end. This is to stop the regulator ...

Re: First-time ROV questions
That's good news odics. A suggestion for rapid results: 1. Get a simple program working first, something like flashing an LED. This will familiarise you with getting from a couple of lines of programming on the screen to actually doing something in hardware in the"real world". Change some ...

Re: First-time ROV questions
OK. If you are determined to use the 3-axis joystick, then there is another mechanical solution, but it involves using 2 servos in your control box, plus another two servo testers. Also, depending on the design of the servo testers, the joystick pots may have to be same or similar value of resistanc...
