I'm using those sparkfun monster motor clone shields with bilge pumps and they can handle a them no problem. Both autocad and solidworks are free or have a huge discount if you are a student. Inventor is free while solidworks is $100.

I've been using solidworks lately, and it is a fantastic program. I am a pretty good autocad user and I picked it up pretty quickly.

the libraries live in arduino/libraries/ps2 library name. the actual code is probably in a .cpp file. There is also a header file (.h) that contains the function prototypes. the keywords file just tells the arduino ide which words to change the color of to make it easier to see.
