Re: An RC Submarine built cheap!!!
Why not trim the shroud off and just epoxy the motor housing in the middle to the back end of the cap? Save you a little on hydrodynamics and protects the power cables where they enter the hull through the cap too.

Re: Hull design for exploring mines?
probably something like this really, small form factor and with submerged thrusters you dont have to worry about knocking it into anything. I guess your only real concern is going to be sediment in the tunnels since they arent usually seeing much water movement.

Re: Budget Ballast
yeah, plastidip or just any old paint, especially oil based. Its not like your ballast is subject to great stress or friction, so long as you have a layer between it and the water it should outlast most parts on your ROV

Re: Measuring tool
I guess it really depends what your measuring, what if you just carried a pair of 1"x1" maker cubes, laid them next to what your trying to measure and then calculated whatever distance you needed from a still shot? Or like someone said, a ruler, you lay the ruler in parallel to the pipe or...

ROVer from the pink lagoon!
Your right about the HD camera though, it doesn't really seem to need much color correction. I wonder if there is a way to calculate how much color correction is actually needed on a particular setting.

Re: Disconnect for Tether at ROV?
do you have a problem with the cable getting kinked as you twist the plug into the ROV? or do you rotate the ROV or the Spool during or after attachment?

Re: compressed air tanks
Yeah some clarification would be good. One think to keep in mind about using compressed gas for ballast (or propulsion?) is the change in trim and ballast as the tank discharges. If any of the gas liquefies (CO2 sometimes, and Propane usually) in the tank then it could roll around and throw off your...
